  • On a six-week holiday to Australia in the autumn of 1996, we experienced two situations that fully persuaded us that God is our refuge, our place of shelter and our source of strength in times of trouble. There is a difference between BELIEVING that God is your refuge and KNOWING and being fully convinced that He is your refuge. Experience is a great teacher and it takes our general beliefs to a much deeper level of understanding. As Christians we need to have more than general beliefs about God and His character, but like Paul, we need to be ‘fully persuaded’ concerning the things of God.
  • Our faith needs to be placed in someone who is ALIVE and who has real power. Someone who can move on your behalf. Someone who can talk to you. Someone who can listen to you. Someone who cries when you do. Someone who can save you. Yes, Jesus Christ died, but He also rose from the dead. He is seated at the right hand of God, the Father and the Holy Spirit is very much alive in the world today.
  • God’s Word can only be effective in us to the extent that we have received it! That morning I heard from God. The Holy Spirit took what I read in this chapter and quickened it to my heart. It was just what I needed to hear. God’s Word is very powerful! A personal revelation to my heart of this chapter has changed my life and helped me cope with my disease. As I looked at my body I suddenly felt glad that I could ‘see’ it – its temporary nature dawned on me. That meant that the part of me that I could not see – my spirit - is eternal! I needed perspective, God’s perspective of my life. In my spirit I sensed God telling me: “Don’t be discouraged. Yes, your body is deteriorating daily, but I am renewing you daily on the inside. You may be weaker externally, but internally you are getting stronger. Your never-ending, heavy burden is actually a light affliction that will be short-lived when compared to eternity and the glory that is ahead of you! Take your eyes off your body which is deteriorating as it has a limited lifespan and rather focus your attention on the unseen things of My kingdom – for they are eternal.”

Excerpts from the book

All my joints were hot and swollen.  I felt like an old person. I remember thinking to myself:  “This can’t be happening to me! There must be some mistake!  Arthritis,” I thought indignantly, “was for ‘old’ people! Why couldn’t my parents do something? Why couldn’t the doctors help me? Where could I turn in my despair?”  My thoughts began to turn to God. What did I know about Him?  Was He real? Could He help me? Would He help me?
