Dear Neighbour,

There is a time of night when we are not fully awake nor fully asleep. During this time God recently dropped this thought into my spirit:  “This life is not the ‘main event’-  it is merely the ‘curtain-raiser’.”

Eternity is the main event. Life as we know it is the curtain-raiser. That is good news for me.  If my life was the main event I would be in trouble.  When we treat this life as the main event we are driven to hold very tightly onto our lives.  We store up treasures on earth.  We cram as much into our lives as possible, rushing from pillar to post, living for the moment with little thought about the future. I believe that if we all take hold of this God-thought we would live our lives very differently.

‘Curtain-raiser’ is a term used to describe events of lesser importance that simply set the stage for the ‘main event’.  At sports events everyone has paid their money to see the big final between two teams but as they take their seats and wait for the big match, they watch other teams that serve to whet their appetite for the main event.  It is similar to the starters before a meal. I have eaten many a starter with long teeth but I wasn’t worried because I knew the main course was on the way. Don’t be discouraged if your life has brought disappointments. For Christians the best has yet to come. We have a main event – eternal Life – to look forward to.

For the living know that they will die;But the dead know nothing, And they have no more reward, For the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, their hatred, and their envy have now perished; Nevermore will they have a share in anything done under the sun. (Ecclesiastes 9:5,6 NKJV)

Unbelievers have no hope, no reward beyond the grave, nothing to look forward to.  What they have right now is the best they will ever experience. Jesus Christ gives us hope for both the curtain-raiser and the main event: If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. (1 Corinthians 15:19 KJV)  Jesus rose from the dead and as His followers our hope extends beyond the grave to a glorious eternity.

If this life is the ‘curtain-raiser’ how are you setting the stage of your life for eternity? What role does Jesus Christ play in your life today? Are all your treasures in this life or are you laying up treasures for the main event?  Is your heart and mind set on things down here or are they fixed on eternity?  He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end. (Ecclesiastes 3:11 NKJV)  The main event is a glorious mystery to us but God has put the desire for a main event, a main course, in our hearts and minds.

Eternity remains firmly in the capable hands of God and we can be assured that He is the greatest events planner of all time. Believers, known as the ‘bride of Christ’, will be called to the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.  You will find a place reserved at His table bearing your name.  Friends, don’t treat the hor’deuves as the main course when God has prepared a banquet for you.  Make sure that you are on the guest list by asking Jesus to be your bridegroom and don’t neglect to tell your friends to make their reservations.

Then he said to me, "Write: 'Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!' "

(Revelation 19:9 NKJV)
