Dear Neighbour,

Let me begin by wishing you a New Year that is blessed by God. I really enjoy the opportunity God gives each one of us to have a new beginning. He is the God of New Beginnings.

In fact, the Bible tells us that He is both the beginning and the end: I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last." (Revelation 22:13). Yes, the world will come to an end, but on God’s timetable. Just as surely as God began the world, He will end the world. In the Book of Revelation, John records what he saw: Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away (Revelation 21:1). Jesus confirmed that this current earth and heaven will come to an end by saying, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away” (Matthew 24:35). It would be a good idea for you to read how God’s book ends, but as we begin 2013, I want to focus on the beginning of God’s book.

Genesis, the first book of the Bible, means ‘the book of beginnings’. The first five words in Genesis 1:1 read: In the beginning God created … these words set the stage for the whole book. (As an author I have discovered just how hard it is to start writing the first few words of an article, essay or book! Authors of children’s books take the easy route by writing, ‘Once upon a time…’!). God had no difficulty starting His book. He knew exactly what He wanted us to know. In our schools, the evolution theory is trying to undermine the fact that God is the Creator. The Bible does not read, ‘In the beginning…the big bang!’. It is important to remember that evolution is not scientific fact, but a theory, man’s theory. Ironically, it takes more faith to believe that everything we see came about by random chance! I choose to believe the Bible. When we look at the universe, nature and our human bodies, it is easy to believe that there is divine intelligence behind these marvellous creations.

You are the one who put me together inside my mother's body, and I praise you because of the wonderful way you created me. Everything you do is marvellous! Of this I have no doubt. Nothing about me is hidden from you! I was secretly woven together deep in the earth below, but with your own eyes you saw my body being formed. Even before I was born, you had written in your book everything I would do. Your thoughts are far beyond my understanding, much more than I could ever imagine. I try to count your thoughts, but they outnumber the grains of sand on the beach. And when I awake, I will find you nearby. (Ps 139:13-18 CEV Contemporary English Version)

I encourage you to begin 2013 by acknowledging that God is in control of the heavens and the earth. He is the mighty and all-powerful Creator who made you and personally invested in your life. If you are privileged to spend some time relaxing on the beach, I want you to run your hands through the sand and remember that His thoughts towards you, personally, outnumber the grains of sand on the beach. No-one loves you more than He does. With childlike faith, acknowledge Him in all His power and greatness. I can assure you that as you begin your year with Him, He will delight in going before you day by day, month by month.

x Libby
